MARIETTA, Ohio.  - Wisconsin men's crew successfully kicked off its spring season at the Marietta Invite, Saturday on the Muskingum River.

Alongside the Badgers and the Pioneers, Adrian and Mercyhurst came together for the regatta. It was a mildly windy morning but a beautiful day for some spring rowing.

The Badgers brought four boats to the Muskingum River. Wisconsin raced past Mercyhurst and Marietta in the varsity eight race with a time of 5:22.8. The team continued to excel in the next three races.

The second varsity eight boat placed first at 5:41.5. Wisconsin had two third varsity eight boats taking first and second ahead of Marietta. The 3VA boat ended at 5:40.2, and the 3VB boat at 5:49.2.

In the varsity four, the Badgers raced past Mercyhurst and Adrian, finishing with a time of 6:16.0.

Up next: The Badgers will travel to the West Coast for the Cal/Stanford Invite in Redwood Shores, California, on April 5 and 6.

Head Coach Beau Hoopman
"Racing was good. The other programs are definitely getting more and more competitive each year. Coach Myhr is doing good things at Marietta.

"We need that race as a wake up to spring season. We haven't been on the water for any more than three times since winter training in Austin, so that's a bit of a shock to the system. We will look to use this experience to catapult us into spring break training where we're going to shoot for 100 miles in five days.

"Next up is Cal at Redwood Shores, who in my opinion will be the team to beat at IRAs at the end of the season."
