Hooper, Zednik pick up points for UW on opening day

EUGENE, Ore. – Two Badgers made their way on the podium while two others advanced to finals on Sunday to highlight action on Friday at the 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field. 

Cole Hooper got Wisconsin on the board on Friday thanks to a PR performance in the hammer throw. The senior launched the implement 216-11 (66.12m), a mark that ranks fifth in school history, to place eighth in the event. 

Jacob Zednik placed seventh for UW in the javelin with a toss of 224-5 (68.41m) to secure two more points for UW. 

Adam Spencer and Liam Newhart fought the final heat of 1500 meters to qualify for the finals which take place on Sunday at 2:58 p.m. CT. Senior Spencer was .12 seconds off of Rheinhardt Harrison's winning time of 3:42.27, crossing the line at 3:42.39 to take second in the race and automatically qualify for finals. Freshman Newhart rounded out the top-five with a time of 3:43.19, the third time-qualifier to join the final lineup out of a steep competition of 41 athletes.

Bob Liking led the Badgers in the 10,000 meters, finishing ninth with a time of 29:28.20 in the highly competitive field. Johnny Livingstone was just a second behind Liking, crossing the line in 29:32.79 to take 11th in the event. Rounding out the night was Micah Wilson, clocking 29:54.31 to finish 15th. 

Up Next: The Badgers resume competition on Saturday during the second day of the 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Action begins at 11:30 a.m. CT with the decathlon 110 hurdles. Fans can watch the action live on Runnerspace or Big Ten Plus.
