The Badgers kick off the spring season with a win in the varsity four race
FAIRFAX, Va. — The No. 4 Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team started its spring season against No. 3 Georgetown Hoyas, highlighted by a win in the varsity four race.
How it happened:
The Badgers' varsity four squad, led by coxswain Charlotte Wise, walked away with the win on the day. Wisconsin finished in 7:16.0 to beat out Georgetown by over three seconds.
Wisconsin closed out the day with close races in the varsity eight and double sculls races, but Georgetown earned narrow victories in both.
The double sculls squad of Rebecca Rasmussen and Maya King covered the course in 7:49.1, falling just over three seconds shy of the Hoyas. Wisconsin battled to the very end in the varsity eight, but ended up coming just five seconds short to concede the race to Georgetown.
From the Shore
Lightweight coach Hadzo "Hodge" Habibovic
"I'm really proud with how our team showed up and raced today. We knew Georgetown was going to be a good early-season test. We were going into this weekend without touching the water since our winter training trip in January, so we had a few things stacked against us, but I think the team approached racing very maturely and executed what we wanted to do today. It's an exciting starting point as we know we will continue to build speed in the coming weeks when we get more water time."
UP NEXT: The Badgers will race in the San Diego Crew Classic next weekend in San Diego, California. The regatta begins on Saturday, March 28, and finishes on Sunday, March 29.
