Why Wisconsin?
"I picked UW because of the combination of high-level academics and competitive athletics. The team felt like family and immediately welcomed me with open arms. Not to mention, the campus is beautiful, full of diverse people, has never ending places to eat. There is truly no place like Madison."
Off the course with Lexi
Where are your favorite places to run in Madison? The Arb or a classic Picnic Point loop
How would your teammates describe you? Sparkly, positive, outgoing
How would you describe the team? Family, crazy, passionate
My favorite thing about Wisconsin cross country is: the rich history behind this program and the legacy that former UW women’s cross made, the talented group of women we have working together each day.
Which teammate have you learned the most from and what have you learned? Former teammate Amy Davis. She always pushed me to be my best. She encouraged me to keep shining and spreading my positive light to the team and this program. Amy shared tips on becoming a better 10k runner and a strong XC competitor but putting in 110% each day, taking easy days easy, hard days hard, and most importantly to never lose the fun and joy in running.
Do you have any pre-meet rituals? I listen to the same pre-meet playlist on my Spotify and play my race song two times before I run. I also always triple knot my shoes… due to my shoe falling off in high school once.
The best thing about the Zimmer Course is: that it is a national course, and we have the ability to train on one of the toughest, yet most amazing courses in the NCAA each week.
What is the strangest thing that has happened to you in a race? Coach Thomas told me to “Think of the trees… think of the houses… think of legit anything.” In my first ever 10,000 meter race. We were on a track in Indiana… there were no trees and no houses.
What is your favorite cross country memory? Being able to attend the NCAA Cross Country nationals my freshman year. We placed seventh as a team, the highest finish in many years
When did you start running competitively? I began running track my freshman year of high school and cross country my sophomore year.
What do you love most about running? I love being able to clear my head and completely change my attitude from going on a run. It can make my day go from a hard, frustrating day to an exciting, uplifting day. I am surrounded by strong women, both at UW but across the entire running community. It brings me joy and has showed me what true mental and physical toughness is and how I can be the best version of myself.
Why did you choose cross country and/or track? Being 100% honest, I first started running to stay in shape for soccer while I was playing in high school. I ended up loving the challenge it brought and the constant work that needed to be put in. I began to improve each race and it kept me wondering just how quick I could go and how hard I can push my physical limits. Running has brought me some of my closest friends and created some of the best memories of my life. It has brought my family even closer and has showed me that I have the most supportive family one could ever ask for.
If you could go on a run with any one person, who would it be? I would love to go on a run with Shalane Flannagan. I love her cookbook and would want to talk about food and proper fueling. Also, I want to talk about how she overcame many obstacles, and incorporated so much cross training and strength work into her training plans.
Post-college plans: Grad school for athletic administration and become a college coach
What causes do you care about? I care about organizations that work with disabled people, whether physical or intellectual. I am passionate about working with Girls on the Run, Best Buddies International, and organizations that work on making health care disparities lesser for minority communities across the globe.
