October 18, 2001 | Men's Cross Country
Matt Tegenkamp, a redshirt freshman at the University of Wisconsin, has been named the Big Ten Conference men's cross country co-athlete of the week, the conference office announced earlier this week. He shares the award with Minnesota's Will McComb.
Tegenkamp, a native of Lee's Summit, Mo., led the fourth-ranked Badgers to the team title at the 33-team Jim Drews Invitational, hosted by UW-LaCrosse, last Saturday. Wisconsin scored 41 points to finish 49 points ahead of second-place UW-LaCrosse.
Tegenkamp won the Badger sprint to the finish edging teammates Isaiah Festa and Josh Spiker to win the 8000-meter race. Tegenkamp won in 25:04.4, while Festa was second in 25:04.6 and Spiker finished third in 25:04.9.
The 2001 U.S. Junior Cross Country National champion, Tegenkamp was also named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Oct. 2 after leading the Badgers to the team title of the Roy Griak Invitational. He ran the fastest time in the Big Ten this season, winning the 8000-meter race in 23:58.0.
The Badgers look to defend their Big Ten Conference crown on Sunday, Oct. 28 when they compete in the 2001 league championship. The men's 8000-meter race will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the University of Illinois Golf Course in Savoy, Ill. Wisconsin is the two-time defending conference team champion and has won the last three individual titles. The Badgers will be challenged by 12th-ranked Michigan and 18th-ranked Michigan State.
