Tegenkamp, Brewster Named Big Ten Athletes of the Week

Matt Tegenkamp, a redshirt freshman on the University of Wisconsin men's cross country team, and Bethany Brewster, a senior on the women's cross country team, have been named the Big Ten Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the Big Ten Office announced today. Tegenkamp wins the honor outright while Brewster shares the women 's award with Michigan State's Ann Somerville.
Tegenkamp, a native of Lee's Summit, Mo., opened his UW career with an individual win at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday. He covered the 8000-meter course in 23:58.0, almost 12 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Tegenkamp led the fourth-ranked Badgers to the men's team title, winning with 129 points, almost 40 points ahead of second-place Portland.
Tegenkamp is the 2001 U.S. Junior Cross Country National champion. He competed for the U.S. at the 2001 World Junior Cross Country Championship finishing fifth and aiding the U.S. to a fourth-place team finish, it's best since 1987.
Brewster led the Badger women to a third-place team finish in the short-course race at the Stanford Invitational. She covered the 4000-meter course in 13:03, to finish fourth.
A native of Freeland, Mich., Brewster is a 2000 cross country all-American after finishing ninth at the NCAA Championship. She is also a two-time all 'Big Ten honoree including a second-place finish at the 2000 conference meet.
