Uliasz Makes 2001-02 USA Hockey Women's National Team

Wisconsin women's hockey player Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Penn.) is one of 25 players to make the 2001-02 U.S. Women's National Team as announced today by USA Hockey. One of nine defenders selected to the squad, Uliasz (pronounced OO-lee-as) will spend the year training in Lake Placid, N.Y. in preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The roster will be cut to 20 before for the 2002 Winter Olympics in February.
A powerful 5-9 defender, Uliasz was chosen from 45 players attending the 2001 USA Hockey Women's National Team Festival. The festival was held Aug. 13-22 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
For the Badgers, Uliasz ranked ninth in scoring during her 2000-01 frosh campaign with 18 points on six goals and 12 assists. The left-handed shot helped Wisconsin with two-game winning goals.
She is one of three players with ties to the WCHA. Also part of the team are the past two WCHA Players of the Year in 2000 winner for Minnesota-Duluth, Jenny Potter (Schmidgall), and 2001 winner for Minnesota, Courtney Kennedy.
Fourteen players on the team won gold medals during the XVIII Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, including Cammi Granato and Karyn Bye. Both were part of the Badgers' inaugural game festivities in 1999. Assistant national team coach Julie Sasner was also part of the Badgers' inaugural contest when she coached the Badgers during the inaugural season.
