Wisconsin Women's Rowing Compete at Head of the Charles
October 20, 2002 | Lightweight Rowing
The Wisconsin women's crew team sent four boats to the Head of the Charles regatta on Sunday. The weather in Boston was clear and windy, with temperatures in the 50s. The UW eight finished 14th, the four placed 12th, the lightweight eight took fourth and the lightweight four finished 23rd.
The openweight eight placed 14th overall, 11th among collegiate teams, and 3rd among Big Ten teams in the Championship Eight Race in 17:08.5. The USRowing team finished first with a time of 16:12.9. The first collegiate team was Yale, who placed third in 16:34. Head coach Maren LaLiberty said, 'We are really pleased with our results. We now have some information on how to improve for a successful spring. '
The openweight four, made up of four sophomore rowers and a sophomore coxswain, placed 12th out of 33 boats in the Championship Four with a time of 19:44.74. The London Training Center boat took first in 18:24.8. LaLiberty said, 'They had an excellent race. They passed two boats and allowed no boats to pass them.'
Wisconsin's lightweight eight placed fourth with a time of 18:02, just 37 seconds behind the first-place boat from the Riverside Boating Club boat (that had two athletes that competed at the World Rowing Championships). Six of the eight women that raced in this boat are sophomores. 'We are very proud that with this young of a crew we were able to be in there with Radcliffe and Princeton - just where we need to be for setting ourselves up for a good spring season.' LaLiberty analyzed.
The lightweight four had an intesting race that led to a 23rd-place finish. Early in the race they got tangled up with the Argonaut Rowing Club Boat, which resulted in a two minute and forty second penalty. This readjusted time for the Badgers was 23:56.6. LaLiberty spoke of the excitement, 'The athletes of course were very disappointed by these results, but have an excellent story to tell for years to come. ' The first place boat from the University of Victoria finished in 18:52.2.
The Badgers' next event, their last of the fall, is the Head of the Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 27.
