The Wisconsin women's soccer team tallied four goals in the first half against Minnesota to claim a 4-1 victory on the road Friday night. The Badgers close Big Ten play with a 4-4-2 record and improve to 8-7-3 overall.
'In the first 25 minutes [of the game], we were electric, ' coach Dean Duerst said. 'We were passing the ball quickly and moving off of it well. We were playing with a lot of confidence.'
Rookie Katy Lindenmuth wasted no time against the Gophers, scoring her fourth goal of the year in the game's second minute. Sophomore Molly Meuer played the ball through to junior Jenny Kundert who slipped the ball in to Lindenmuth. Lindenmuth fired a one-timer into the upper corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Kundert was also involved in the next Badger goal, finding sophomore Amy Vermeulen on a great run. Vermeulen took Kundert's pass on a nice diagonal run and kicked it into the far low corner to tally the eventual game winner. Vermeulen has notched two game-winning goals this season.
In the 34th minute, Lindenmuth became the third Badger this year to score two goals in a game. Vermeulen assisted on Lindenmuth's second goal, a nearly identical score to her first tally. Lindenmuth has five goals and 11 points on the year, good for second on the team.
Minnesota joined the scoring melee at 37:49 as Rachael Roth found Annie Carr to make it 3-1. But the Badgers quickly responded, scoring four minutes later. After two assists, it was Kundert's time to net a goal. Kundert scored the game 's final mark at 41:40, her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
'Kundert was incredible,' Duerst said. 'Jenny really created [opportunities] and on her goal she was out wide and split two people and got closer in and closer in. She demonstrated her finesse and power; the finesse to beat people and then the power to finish.'
Wisconsin took more shots and corner kicks in the second half compared to the first half, but the ending stanza closed 0-0.
'In the second half we played a lot of personnel and rotated some people around,' Duerst said. 'We needed this win to close out our conference season. It was a fabulous team effort.'
The Badgers take on the UW-Green Bay Phoenix Sunday at noon in Green Bay, Wis.
