Wisconsin Women Finish Fall at Head of the Iowa
October 27, 2002 | Lightweight Rowing
The Wisconsin women's rowing teams completed their fall competition seasons with participation in the Head of the Iowa on the Iowa River, Sunday. Three UW lightweight boats won races, while three openweight boats took home crowns.
The Wisconsin lightweight eights claimed first and second place in the lightweight eight race, while the lightweight fours did the same. With temperatures in the 50s and with light winds, the UW lightweight novice eights swept the first three spots in their race.
In openweight racing, the UW openweight eight entered five boats, with the Badgers' top boat finishing second behind Iowa, the host school and a team the Badgers beat at the Head of the Rock two weeks ago. The Hawkeyes finished the three-mile course in 13:26, while Wisconsin reached the finish in 13:29. Minnesota was third in 13:31. Wisconsin boats also finished ninth, 10th, 17th and 19th with 27 boats entered.
'Hopefully this disappointment will show us we need to work over the winter to improve our boat-moving ability, to improve the depth of our team and to find the fastest combination of eight rowers for spring racing,' said head coach Maren LaLiberty.
The UW claimed openweight titles in the double, where they took the top two spots, the novice eight, and the novice four, where they swept the top two positions.
'This was a perfect end-of-the-season regatta,' said LaLiberty. 'We had some minor disappointment that I hope will provide some learning opportunity for the team over the winter, but we had some great successes that helped cap off a wonderful racing season.'
'This fall has been a time of tremendous change and I 'm impressed with our student-athletes' ability to embrace a new vision for the team.
