The Wisconsin women's soccer team used a corner kick and two headers to edge Illinois, 1-0, Friday night in Champaign, Ill. The Badgers improve to 5-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the Big Ten.
'It was important to get a win on the road,' coach Dean Duerst said.
The Badgers notched the lone goal off the play of three forwards in the 60th minute. Sophomore Amy Vermeulen sent a corner into the mix and over the head of senior Jess Wolff. Junior Jenny Kundert played the ball back to Wolff who sent it in for the score.
'We're starting to get better connection and movement from our forwards,' Duerst said. 'Tonight our forwards did a great job of combining with each other.'
On the goal, Kundert headed the ball back across the goal taking the keeper out of the play and Wolff headed it in off the crossbar. It was Wolff's first goal of the year and Kundert's team-leading sixth assist on the season.
'[Jenny] was just a force tonight,' Duerst said.
Notching its third shutout of the year, the UW defense was also a force versus Illinois. Senior keeper Kelly Conway led the charge with eight saves including two spectacular blocks. Conway made a flying save, stopping a ball heading towards the upper corner and made a goal-saving breakaway stop.
'Kelly had an outstanding game,' Duerst said. 'We started with a strong defensive lineup and as a team, we defended very well. '
The Badgers continue their road trip on Sunday, facing Iowa at 1 p.m.
