Badgers Tie Hawkeyes, 1-1
October 06, 2002 | Women's Soccer
In an intense and physical game, the Wisconsin women's soccer team turned up the heat in overtime, but couldn't get past host Iowa Sunday afternoon. The Badgers' record moves to 5-5-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the Big Ten.
'[Iowa] is physical and they commit themselves. We matched that at times, but didn't connect well enough like we've done in other games,' coach Dean Duerst said. 'We showed a resiliency in overtime. We started to play, started to knock the ball around and get chances.'
Lisa Himrod had the best shot at giving Bucky a 2-1 win over Iowa with a shot from eight yards out in the second overtime. But Iowa keeper Britta Vogele was there for the save, one of her 14 on the day. Marla Froelich and Sarah Capel created other opportunities for the Badgers, but were unable to find the back of the net.
'We had quality chances and didn't finish, ' Duerst said. 'We didn't play our game, and maybe that 's part of Iowa's credit.'
The game's scoring occurred in the first 11 minutes of play, with the Hawkeyes gaining a 1-0 advantage at 9:52. On a throw in, Iowa moved the ball around a couple UW defenders and Katelyn Quinn slipped it to Sarah Lynch who smashed it to the lower left corner for the lead.
Less than a minute later at 10:57, Jenny Kundert moved to the middle, turned to beat a defender and passed the ball to a sprinting Katy Lindenmuth. Lindenmuth knocked a slow rolling ball that hit the far post and bounced in to tie the game. It was Lindenmuth's third goal of the season and Kundert's team-leading seventh assist.
In the second half, the physical game play caught up to the Badgers and Kundert was briefly knocked unconscious and left the game 10 minutes into the second frame. For the second game this weekend, Iowa tallied more than 20 fouls in regulation with 24 and 26 total. UW tallied nine fouls in regulation and 11 total.
'It obviously hurt not having our best scorer on the field, ' Duerst said. 'Jenny's an impact player. We rotated a lot, tried to keep the energy high, but we just didn't play as effective.'
The defense anchored the Badgers again as senior co-captains Kelly Conway and Lauren Schmidt made key saves in the backfield. Conway made eight saves in the net for the Badgers and Schmidt made a great sliding block to calm an Iowa surge on net.
The Badgers continue their four-game road trip next weekend with games versus Northwestern Friday and UW-Milwaukee Sunday. UW's seventh Big Ten contest this season starts at 4 p.m. while its second in-state match kicks off at noon.
