Shields Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Morgan Shields, a member of the University of Wisconsin volleyball team, has been named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week for Nov. 18. Shields earns her second Big Ten Player of the Week honor of the season after setting the Badgers to sweeps over Illinois and Purdue last weekend in the UW Field House. She earned the first conference player of the week honor of her career on Sept. 9, 2002. The wins moved Wisconsin into a tie for second place in the Big Ten standings with Penn State. Wisconsin averaged 19.17 kills per game while connecting on .308 percent of its attacks in the two matches.
The 5-11 setter averaged 14.67 assists per game on the weekend. She also had nine kills (1.50/game) and hit .615 percent. She added 3.50 digs per game, including a match-high 13 against the Illini, 0.83 blocks and 0.50 service aces per game.
On the season, Shields, a native of Watertown, Wis., ranks among the top setters in the country with 13.82 assists per game. She leads the team with 0.58 service aces per game and adds 2.49 digs, 0.57 blocks and 1.06 kills per game while hitting .284 percent.
No. 14 Wisconsin (20-7 overall, 11-5 Big Ten) wraps up the home portion of the Big Ten season with two matches in the UW Field House this week. The Badgers host travel-partner Northwestern (16-12, 9-7) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Wisconsin hosts 17th-ranked Penn State (21-6, 11-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.
