The Wisconsin women's soccer team enters postseason play this weekend with the 2002 Big Ten Tournament in East Lansing, Mich. The Badgers first round opponent is host Michigan State. UW faces MSU Thursday at 5 p.m. CST.
Wisconsin (10-7-3, 4-4-2 Big Ten) enters the Big Ten tourney on a three-game winning streak. In its final three games of the regular season, UW outscored its opponents 10-2. Wisconsin has also won seven of its last ten.
The Badgers defeated the Spartans during the regular season, 3-1. Junior Jenny Kundert scored two goals, including the game-winner, and tallied an assist versus MSU on Sept. 29. Kundert leads the Badgers with eight goals, 11 assists and 27 points. Sophomore Amy Vermeulen ranks second with seven assists and 17 points. Rookie Katy Lindenmuth and Vermeulen share second on the team with five goals apiece.
Wisconsin's tournament history includes one title and two runners-up finishes. Playing host to the inaugural Big Ten tournament, the Badgers won the 1994 postseason title with a 3-0 victory over Minnesota. The Badgers were runners-up in 1995 and 1996. After missing the tournament for the first time last season, the Badgers are back this year as the fifth seed.
Second-seeded Michigan kicks off the 2002 Big Tens versus No. 7 Ohio State Thursday morning, followed by No.3 Purdue/No. 6 Indiana. The winners of those two matchups meet Friday at 2 p.m. In the other half of the bracket, if the Badgers win they will face the winner of the No. 1 Penn State/No. 8 Illinois game Friday at 5:30 p.m.
