December 09, 2002 | Football
Jim Leonhard, a sophomore walk-on strong safety with the Wisconsin football team, was named a first-team All-American by CNN/SI.com on Monday.
Senior center Al Johnson earned honorable mention All-America recognition from CNN/SI.com.
Leonhard leads the nation in interceptions with a school-record 10 and paces the Big Ten with 24 pass breakups (one short of the UW record). Leonhard also broke the UW season record for punt return yardage with 438.
Leonhard, who hails from Tony, Wis. (pop. 114), walked onto the Badger football team in the fall of 2001. He already has earned first-team All-Big Ten honors this season.
