Former Badger Runners to Compete in World Championships

Three former UW runners will be in Dublin, Ireland this weekend to race in the 30th IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Suzy Favor Hamilton and Jared Cordes will be running for Team USA while Kathy Butler will be running for Great Britain.
Cordes will compete in the men's short course (4000 meters) on Saturday while Butler will challenge in the women's long course (6000 meters) race also on Saturday. Favor Hamilton races in the women's short course (4000 meters) on Sunday.
Favor Hamilton won nine NCAA individual titles and was a 14-time all-American during her track and cross-country career at the UW. She has participated in three Olympics, three track World Championships and three Goodwill games. Favor Hamilton, who graduated in 1991, serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the Badgers.
Cordes, a 2001 graduate of Wisconsin, was a four-time all-American in cross-country and track for the Badgers. He excelled in the 5000 meters and the 3000-meter steeplechase in track, finishing in the top 10 in the NCAA in both events.
Butler will be competing in her sixth World Cross Country championships. The 1996 Olympian was very successful in her three-year career at Wisconsin. She won five NCAA titles including three consecutive outdoor 3000-meter titles and was a 13-time all-American for the Badgers from 1995-97. Along with Favor Hamilton, she also coaches the UW women on a volunteer basis.
