Women's Golf Opens Big Tens in Eighth

Led by sophomore Malinda Johnson, the Wisconsin women's golf team is in eighth place at the Big Ten Championship after posting rounds of 303 and 312 during the first day of competition. Johnson fired an even-par 72 in the opening round, before posting a 77 in the afternoon to sit tied for seventh.
Senior Heidi Njoes tied her career-low 36-hole total with a 75-78 '153 and is tied for 22nd. Junior Katie Connelly got off to a slow start with a 78 in the morning session, but posted a 76 in the afternoon to move into a tie for 24th at 154.
Sophomore Emily Hendricks is tied for 56th after shooting a 78-85 '163. Junior Carli Gregorin improved upon an opening-round 85 with an 81 to tie for 63rd at 166. Freshman Andrea Nelson is in 65th after an 85-83'168.
Ohio State has a five-shot lead over the field in the team standings with a 10-over-par 586. A pair of Buckeyes are tied for the individual lead at 1-under 143. Mollie Fankhauser opened with a 75 before posting a 4-under-par 68 in the second round to jump into a tie for the lead with teammate Lindsay Knowlton who shot rounds of 71 and 72.
Purdue has a firm hold on second with 591, followed by Indiana at 597, and Michigan at 598. Michigan State rounds out the top five with a 605.
Third-round action at the 2002 Big Ten Championship begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the par-72 Stone Creek Golf Course, with the final round played Sunday.
