April 09, 2002 | Women's Golf
Sophomore Malinda Johnson was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week for her efforts at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout March 28-29. It was the first weekly honor of her career.
Johnson captured her first individual title at the Shootout, firing an even-par 74-70'144 at the 6,007-yard Tapatio Springs Golf Course. Entering the final round two shots off the lead, Johnson carded a final-round 2-under-par 70 to cruise to a three-shot victory and help the Badgers to a fifth-place finish.
Johnson is second on the team with a 76.09 average this season and also holds the UW 18-hole record with a 3-under-par 69 at the Lady Northern Invitational during the fall season. The Eau Claire, Wis., native has led the Badgers four times this season and has posted four top-10 finishes.
The Badgers head to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Hawkeye Invitational this weekend at the Finkbine Golf Course. The 54-hole competition will begin with 36 holes on Saturday, and conclude with the final round on Sunday. Ten teams are scheduled to compete, including Big Ten foes Indiana, Iowa and Michigan. Wisconsin finished seventh out of 12 teams at the meet last season.
