Women's Golf Tied For 12th at Central Regional

The Wisconsin women's golf team opened play at the 21-team NCAA Central Regional with a 324 to sit tied for 12th at the par-72 Forest Akers West Golf Course. Play was delayed in the morning due to heavy rain and lightening.
The top eight teams will earn spots in the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championship, May 21-24, hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle.
The Badgers, making their second regional appearance in school history, are just 10 shots out of eighth place. Junior Katie Connelly and sophomore Malinda Johnson led the way for Wisconsin with matching 5-over 77s to tie for 15th. Connelly carded three birdies on the day.
Junior Carli Gregorin and sophomore Emily Hendricks are tied for 82nd after shooting a pair of 85s. Senior Heidi Njoes is tied for 102nd after posting a 90.
Kent State has the top spot in the team standings with a 304, two shots ahead of Oklahoma State. Baylor and Big Ten rival Purdue are tied for third at 309. Michigan State rounds out the top five with a 310.
Melanie Hagewood of Baylor leads the field with a 2-under 70, one shot ahead of a trio of players tied at 71.
NCAA Central Regional action continues tomorrow with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played on Saturday.
