Badgers open Big Ten season with a tie

The Wisconsin women's soccer team opened the 2002 Big Ten season with a 2-2 tie versus Indiana Friday night in Bloomington, Ind. After severe weather hit the Midwest for most of the day Friday, both teams battled through poor field conditions.
'The field was very slick, very wet,' coach Dean Duerst said. 'So we had to make some adjustments.'
Sophomore Sarah Capel got the Badgers (3-3-2, 0-0-1 Big Ten) on the board early, with an unassisted score in the sixth minute of play. Capel hit the ball from the side, crossing it over and finding the upper left corner of the net for her third goal of the year. Capel leads the team with three goals and has notched a point in every weekend of play this season.
The Badgers preserved their one-goal lead through the half, but ten minutes into the second stanza, Indiana's Kim Grodek pulled IU even. Grodek fired from 10 yards out and the ball hit the crossbar and it careened into the net for her first goal of the year.
Wisconsin answered seven minutes later with Amy Vermeulen's first goal of the year. Junior Jenny Kundert moved the ball up the right side and crossed the ball into frosh Katy Lindenmuth. Lindenmuth controlled the ball quickly enough to beat a defender, but calmly enough to lay it to Vermeulen who slammed it in low.
'We've got enough games under our belt,' Duerst said. 'We're putting things together and seeing our combinations work well.'
The Hoosiers responded within two minutes as another athlete notched her first goal of the year. Kristen Sprunger brought Indiana back from its second one-goal deficit for good with a low goal assisted by Kate Kastl and Lisa Tecklenburg.
The Badgers continue their Big Ten opening weekend Sunday when they face Purdue. UW kicks off versus the Boilermakers at 1 p.m.
