Women Golfers Take Second at Fall Opener

Wisconsin womens golf team finished second behind Kent State at the Mary Fossum Invitational. The 6,113 yard, 72-par Forest Akers West golf course proved an easy challenge Sunday for Kent State's golfers who stole first place with a second day performance of 298, the tournament 18-hole team low, for a total 907 strokes. Only seven strokes behind were the Badgers with a 307 on the day and a 54-hole total of 914 (302-305-307). The invitational consisted of 36 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday and was the Badgers first contest of the 2002-03 season. It included 12 other teams, four from the Big Ten. Also finishing in the top five were Michigan State (300-300-316'916), Illinois (316-299-306'921), and Kansas State (315-302-314'931).
Junior Malinda Johnson clinched the number five spot among individuals, shooting a 3-over par 75 today, with her 76 and 73 from yesterday totaled 224. Senior Katie Connelly also managed a 75 to move from yesterday's 20th position to finish at 11th with a total 229 strokes. Also finishing in the top twenty was freshman Lindsay McMillan, tying for 18th with scores 73-78-82'233. Other Badgers competing were senior Carli Gregorian (77-76-83'236), freshman Jackie Obermueller (82-80-75 '237), and freshman Melissa Martin (82-82-86'250). Winning the individual title was Nebraska's Sarah Sasse (75-74-72'221) on the second hold of a playoff with Michigan State's Allison Fouch (75-72-74'221).
