The Wisconsin women's soccer team lost to the No. 20 Purdue Boilermakers, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind. The Badgers fall to 3-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in Big Ten play. UW's four losses on the year have all been one-goal games.
'We've got to keep the pressure on,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'We have to pick up our intensity.'
A scoreless game through the first half and into the first fifteen minutes of the second, Purdue's Lauren Sesselmann broke the tie with a goal in the 62st minute. A Boilermaker throw in set up Annette Kent, who warded off a Badger defender and sent it to Sesselmann, who made a turn and deflected it in to give Purdue the 1-0 lead. Krystal Pepper also assisted on the play.
The Badgers lost Molly Meuer in the 64rd minute, who earned her second yellow card of the game and UW was forced to finish the game with ten players. Amy Vermeulen had the best scoring chance for the Badgers, bringing the ball in alone against the keeper, but shot it wide. Kelly Conway made seven saves on the day.
'Kelly was rock solid,' Duerst said. 'She was able to make some very nice saves, she was very active.'
The Badgers continue Big Ten action at home this weekend when they play host to Michigan and Michigan State. UW faces the Wolverines Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and the Spartans Sunday at noon.
'It's early in the conference season,' Duerst said. 'Our priority is to come out with more emotion. I'm looking forward to playing at home and getting a couple of wins.'
