November 01, 2003 | Women's Hockey
Despite a late rally, the sixth-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team dropped a 3-2 loss to WCHA opponent Ohio State Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
UW sophomore Sharon Cole led the Badgers with a goal and an assist, while junior Molly Engstrom also scored a goal for the Badgers. Sophomore goaltender Meghan Horras collected 15 saves and OSU goaltender Melissa Glaser earned 34 saves in the Buckeye win.
Ohio State's Heather Farrell opened up scoring just eight seconds into the first period for an early 1-0 lead before teammate Jaclyn Haines notched her own goal at 1:17 in the second period to make it 2-0 Buckeyes.
Down two goals, the Badgers' offense continued the attack and finally broke Glaser in the OSU net with Cole's power-play goal at 6:55 in the second period. Wisconsin team captain Carla MacLeod assisted on the goal with a long shot from near center ice. Cole found the puck after it bounced off Glaser's stick and flicked it in for the score.
Ohio State came back 10 minutes later on its own power-play goal by Tessa Bonhomme at 16:11 for the 3-1 score. The Badgers began their late rally in the third period with a heavy shooting barrage against Glaser. In total, UW outshot OSU 14-1 in the final period and a well-placed puck by Engstrom at 19:44 finally lit the lamp again for Wisconsin. Frosh Bobbi-Jo Slusar and Cole assisted on the goal.
With just 16 seconds left, UW continued to battled OSU for the equalizer, but time ran out on the clock to give the Buckeyes their first win over the Badgers since 2000 and first ever at the Kohl Center.
Although Wisconsin didn't celebrate success on the ice Saturday afternoon, the Badgers welcomed the families of this year's women 's hockey squad to a festive dinner and video showing to celebrate the first month 's success of the 2003'04 season. The UW team, staff and their families enjoyed dinner together at the Kohl Center following the game.
Wisconsin, now 4-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the WCHA, drops the puck against Ohio State (1-4-0, 1-4-0 WCHA) again Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2:05 p.m. Fans are invited to bring their skates and join the Wisconsin team and staff for 'Skate With The Badgers' on the Kohl Center ice immediately following the game.
