Wisconsin Women's Golf Signees
November 14, 2003 | Women's Golf
New head women's golf coach Todd Oehrlein has signed two great athletes in his first recruiting class. Local Edgewood High School senior Katie Elliott and Mayumi Kobayashi of Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Calif. have both signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Wisconsin next fall.
'"We are excited to have two players of such great ability join our program,' Oehrlein said. 'Katie Elliott had an outstanding year in summer junior events as well as high school. She brings a great work ethic, on the golf course and in the classroom, and rapport with many current players on our team.'
Oehrlein continued, 'Mayumi will bring a wealth of national experience to our program. She played extensively this summer all around the country, winning one AJGA event. Being named a Polo All-American speaks for itself."
Elliott was recently named the Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Player of the Year. That follows being named the 2003 Wisconsin PGA Player of the Year this past summer. As a WPGA junior tour player, Elliott had seven first-place finishes and five second place finishes during 2003. She was the runner-up WPGA Player of the Year in 2002.
The three-year Madison high school city player of the year, Elliott won 13 of 16 statewide matches in her senior season including the WIAA state Div. II title. It was the first time Edgewood played in the second division, and Elliott's score bested the Div. I medalist. She is a two-time WGCA first-team all-state player and three-time all-city team member. She won the Westfield Wisconsin PGA Junior Championship in 2003 and 2002, and won her age group in the Madison City Junior Championship from 2000-2002. She was the overall city junior champion in 2003.
A two-time Badger Conference Player of the Year is equally successful in the classroom earning WGCA All-Academic honors three years. She is an honor roll student at Edgewood and member of the National Honor Society.
Also signing was Mayumi Kobayashi, a native of Kyoto, Japan who now resides in Santa Monica, Calif. Kobayashi picked the Badgers over several well-established national programs. She was named a 2003 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Polo All-American honorable mention and was a qualifier for the 2003 Junior World and 2003 Optimists Junior Championship. A three-time high school MVP, she won the 2003 Lockton Kansas City AJGA tournament with scores of 71-75-78. She placed second in the 2003 Bank of Montreal Future Links, Jr., and had top four finishes in two other major AJGA tournaments since 2001. She set the women's record with a 67 at the Valencia Country Club in Valencia, Calif., in Aug. of 2002.
