Wisconsin Rowing to Hold Crew House Farewell
April 17, 2003 | Men's Rowing
The University of Wisconsin Athletics Department and crew programs will hold a crew house farewell on Sunday, May 4 at approximately 11 a.m., following the men's race for the Jablonic Cup against Boston University.
There will be a one-hour program on the roof of the UW Crew House with emcee Associate Vice Chancellor Al Fish. The program will commemorate the current building before construction begins on the new crew house this spring. Wisconsin Rowing Association president Al Erickson, head men's rowing coach Chris Clark and former women's rowing head coach Sue Ela, among others, will take part.
The current UW Crew House, which was built in 1967, was designed to serve 60-70 athletes of Wisconsin's men's rowing program. The addition of women's crew in 1972 and women's lightweight crew in 1995 has raised the number to 150-175 total athletes using the crew house in the spring and up to 400 total in the fall.
Wisconsin currently rows year-round through an indoor training facility located in the UW Crew House. In addition to a storage area for shells, the Crew House features an indoor rowing tank, about 40 ergometers and weight-training equipment.
Plans are in the works for construction of a new three-story crew house to serve the expanded needs of the three rowing teams. The project is expected to begin by mid-June 2003 with completion scheduled for the fall of 2004.
