Badger Women Golfers Tee off at NCAA Championship
May 20, 2003 | Women's Golf
The Badger women's golf team will make history today when it tees off in its first NCAA National Div. I Women's Golf Championship. It is the first time Wisconsin will be represented in the NCAA Tournament as an entire team. Former Badger Allie Blomquist made the final tournament as an individual in 2001 tying for 18th.
Senior Katie Connelly leads a strong contingent that finished sixth at the Central Regional Tournament. The top eight teams from three regionals comprise the national meet. Connelly, well on her way to setting the career stroke average record with her four-year average of 76.18, won the NCAA Central Regional meet with a 71-70-76-217.
Junior Malinda Johnson, who has led the Badgers in six meets this season and leads the team in stroke average with an 18-hole mark of 75.72, placed third at the Regional. She and Connelly have been UW's one-two punch all season.
Also participating are senior Carli Gregorin, and two freshmen, Lindsay McMillan and Jackie Obermueller.
The Badgers tee off at 9 a.m. today and 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 72-hole tournament that runs through Friday at Purdue's par 72 Kampen Course. The Pete Dye designed course will play to 6,225 yards. The tournament can be followed live at www.golfstatlive.com.
