Badgers Remain at 23rd in NCAA National Golf Championship

With better conditions, play improved throughout the field today as the Badgers shot a 316 but remained in 23rd place with a two-day total 656 after the second round of the NCAA Div. I Women's Golf Championship in West Lafayette, Ind.
Junior Malinda Johnson led all Badger scores with a four-over par 76 which ties her at 24th in the field with a 155. Senior Katie Connelly broke 80 with a 78 to tie at 77th with a two-day total 162.
Lindsay McMillen and Jackie Obermueller each improved 10 strokes from yesterday. McMillen had a 93-82'175 while Obermueller went from 90 to 80 for a 170 and is tied for 115th. Carli Gregorin closed at 87-94'181.
With weather improved, Coach Dennis Tiziani noted, 'Play was improved, too. We finished well'had some big holes, though. That is this golf course. You get some holes where there are some doubles and some triples and that 's basically what we did. We played good for maybe 14 or 16 holes and a couple holes each group just had a little bit of trouble on. But (play was) a lot better '25 or so strokes better. And we'd like to improve by 25 tomorrow. '
Although disappointed by her performance so far, senior Katie Connelly commented on playing in her first national tournament. 'It's a dream come true. That is how I wanted to end the season. Yesterday was the worse. It 's (the course) tough as it is, but when you have bad weather, it's even worse.'
When asked what the best part of playing in the tournament Connelly said, 'Just being here. It's awesome.'
With a 32-over par 609, Southern California remains the team leader, three strokes ahead of Oklahoma State at 611, and five better than Pepperdine at 613. Big Ten Champion Ohio State is fourth with a 309-307'616. The Women of Troy are seeking their first national championship.
Annie Thurman of Oklahoma State was two over today and is three-over par for the tournament with a 73-74'147 to set the individual pace.
Play resumes Thursday at 8 a.m. The 72-hole tournament concludes Friday.
