Brewster Advances in NCAA 1500
June 12, 2003 | Women's Track & Field
Ryan Tremelling used a strong second-day performance to finish eighth in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The junior from Arena, Wis., tied for fourth in the decathlon pole vault at 15-5 and finished seventh in the decathlon 1500 meters in 4:34.55 to move up eight places on the second day. Tremelling, who was the highest Big Ten Conference finisher with 7,346 points, picks up his first All-America honor and scores one point for the Badgers in the team race.
Also for the UW men, senior Steve Jones failed to clear the opening height in the men's high jump and sophomore Dan Murray did not advance in the semifinals of the 800 meters. Murray finished seventh in his heat in 1:48.79.
For the UW women, senior Bethany Brewster ran one of the fastest times in UW history to advance to the finals of the 1500 meters. The Freeland, Mich., native finished third in her heat in 4:11.92, which was a personal best by almost four seconds and ranks fourth on the UW all-time list.
'It was a little unfortunate that we had all three of our 1500 meters in Heat one and that was by far the most difficult heat. We had the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in that heat,' said UW women's coach Peter Tegen.
'In the end, when we did our final rundown, Bethany was looking absolutely awesome. She came out of eighth place all the way up front. In the final straightaway, she was in third place to automatically qualify for the final. That was a great job for her.'
Junior Hilary Edmondson also ran a personal best in the 1500 meters but did not advance. The Sarnia, Ontario, native finished eighth in the same heat as Brewster in 4:16.11, which was a best by almost three seconds. Freshman Linsey Blaisdell finished 11th in the heat in 4:26.95.
'Hilary hung in there really, really tough and just missed the final by two people,' said Tegen. 'It was a little too fast for Linsey. We have to be quite content that she qualified for the national meet as a freshman. '
Tiffany McWilliams of Mississippi State won the heat in 4:10.60 while UCLA junior Lena Nilsson finished second in 4:11.27. The second heat was much slower with the winning time of 4:13.18.
The women's 1500 meter final is on Saturday at 7:40 p.m. PT.
Senior Tara Clack just missed qualifying for the final of the women 's pole vault. The Windsor, Wis., native cleared her first two heights one her first attempts but was unable to clear her third height of 13-1 ', which would have advanced her to the final. Clack cleared 12-9 ' to tie for 15th with the top 14 athletes all clearing 13-1 '.
