June 16, 2003 | Men's Cross Country
The Wisconsin women's cross country team will run in eight events during the 2003 season while the men will compete in six, culminating at the 2003 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 2 in East Lansing, Mich., and the 2003 NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. The men's season starts on Aug. 29 at the Hawkeye Invitational while the women begin on Sept. 12 at the Tennessee adidas Invitational.
Last season, the men finished second at the NCAA championships, their 20th top-five finish at the national meet. The Badgers also won the Big Ten championship for the fourth consecutive season, posting the second-largest margin of victory in meet history. The UW returns Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year Matt Tegenkamp as well as fellow All-American Bobby Lockhart. Also returning are second-team All-Big Ten honorees Tim Keller and Simon Bairu.
The Badger women finished fifth at last year's Big Ten meet and 19th at the NCAA championship. The UW returns five of the seven runners that competed in last season's NCAA meet, including first-team All-Big Ten selection Hilary Edmundson (senior) and second-team honoree Jackie Mulrooney (sophomore). Sophomore Heidi Lane was also an all-region choice in 2002.
