Sophomore basketball player Ebba Gebisa was named as a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar award for the 2002-03 academic year. Gebisa, a business major from West Lafayette, Ind., earned second team national honors for women's basketball.
The 6-3 starting forward had a 4.0 this spring semester and is the Athletic Board Scholar in basketball with a 3.909 cumulative grade point average. She earned her first Academic All-Big Ten honor this past year.
The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards are sponsored by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine. To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must be a person of minority ethnic background, have maintained a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and have demonstrated a record of campus or community service.
Gebisa became a regular starter as a sophomore averaging career-bests 7.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. She had a career-high 20 points vs. Northwestern, and a career-best nine rebounds last season. She adjusted to a new position at small forward at mid-semester to accommodate her sister, Lello, as a regular in the starting lineup.
Black Issues has been awarding the Sports Scholar of the Year award since December 1992. In 1994, the award was named after Arthur Ashe Jr., in recognition of the late tennis star's achievements in academics, athletics and community service.
