September 13, 2003 | Women's Golf
Malinda Johnson and her Badger women's golf teammates battled sleeting rain and poor course conditions Saturday to play host to day two of the 2003 Badger Invitational.
The Wisconsin women's golf team's first-ever Badger Invite will be shortened from 54 to 36 holes due to continuous bad weather at University Ridge this weekend.
In a repeat of Friday's stormy conditions, the second day of the 2003 Badger Invitational saw play again postponed due to inclement weather and poor course conditions Saturday. With six holes left to play from Friday, the 18 men's and women's teams completed round one and then immediately began round two Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
Play was suspended at 1:30 p.m. as conditions worsened once again. The remaining six holes of round two will be completed Sunday, Sept. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. Round three of the Invitational has been cancelled in order to allow sufficient return travel time for visiting teams.
Johnson, a UW senior, shot an even-par 72 to claim first place after 18 holes Saturday morning, while Michigan State's Allison Fouch and Sarah Martin tied Purdue's Beth Hermes for second place overall with a one-over par 73.
In the team standings, Michigan State leads the women with a team score of 303, followed by Purdue (309), Arkansas-Little Rock (314), Northwestern (316) and Wisconsin (320) in the top five of nine teams.
Badger newcomer Nicki Morse finished just five strokes behind Johnson for second on the UW team and to tie for sixth place overall. Frosh Taryn Rechlicz is tied for 28th with an 84 and teammate Jill Ries shot a 87 to finish the first round tied for 38th and the top four scores on the team. Also competing, Wisconsin's Jackie Obermueller scored 89.
