September 14, 2003 | Women's Golf
After a rain-shortened 36 holes of the 2003 Badger Invitational, Malinda Johnson shot a par 72 to tie Michigan State's Allison Fouch for first place with 144. The UW senior lost in the second hole of the ensuing tiebreaker to finish second overall, while leading the Wisconsin women's golf team to third place with a team score of 627.
With nine birdies over the weekend, Johnson entered the final six holes of round two Sunday morning in first place, following a par 72 in the first round. Fouch had shot a 73 to tie for second with teammate Sarah Martin and Purdue's Beth Hermes during round one, but dropped two strokes off her earlier performance for a 71 to tie Johnson at the end.
Johnson and Fouch both record four strokes for par on the first hole of the tiebreaker, but the MSU senior birdied the second hole to beat Johnson's even-par performance by one stroke to claim the individual title.
Overall, Michigan State's women's golfers claimed the team title after shooting 608 (303-305'608), while second-place Purdue shot 619 (309-310'619) to edge the Badgers by eight strokes. Wisconsin improved its first-day performance of 320 by 13 strokes in round two to finish with 627 (320-307 '627). Northwestern (629) and Arkansas-Little Rock (640) completed the top-five team standings.
Oconomowoc, Wis., native Nicki Morse, a UW frosh, improved her own first-day performance by two strokes to finish seventh overall with a 77-75'152. Teammates Jill Ries and Jackie Obermueller both bettered their scores by eight strokes as Wisconsin's final two scoring players recorded a 87-79'166 (T-30th) and 89-81'170 (34th), respectively. Frosh Taryn Rechlicz finished the weekend with a 84-88'172.
The Badgers travel to Michigan State, Sept. 20-21, for the Fossom Invitational next weekend. Results will be available on UWBADGERS.COM.
