Badgers Set for Jim Drews Invitational

Top-ranked Wisconsin heads to La Crosse, Wis,. this weekend for the Jim Drews Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16. The 8,000-meter race will take place at the Maple Grove Golf Course, with competition beginning at 10:30 a.m. CST. Twenty-one teams will battle for the top spot, including, No. 16 Minnesota, Illinois State, Iowa State and North Dakota.
The Badgers aim to repeat last year's near-flawless performance, when they captured the team title with 19 total points. Senior Josh Spiker won the event, with Tim Nelson placing third, followed by Simon Bairu in fourth.
Wisconsin was last in action on Sept. 25, at the Roy Griak Invitational, in Minneapolis. The Badgers dominated the 30-team competition, placing six runners in the top-10, for a total of 21 team points. Senior Matt Tegenkamp took home the individual title for the second time in his career, finishing the 8-kilometer race in 24:02. In addition, the win earned Tegenkamp his second Big Ten Runner of the Week honors.
Also in action for UW were Simon Bairu, Chris Solinsky, Josh Spiker, Tim Nelson, Tim Keller and Bobby Lockhart. These same seven runners will compete this weekend in La Crosse.
The Jim Drews Invite is also the last race for UW until the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Oct. 31, in Iowa City, Iowa. Wisconsin hopes to capture its sixth consecutive title under head coach Jerry Schumacher and 38th overall.
