Badgers Topple No. 13 Michigan 3-1
October 17, 2004 | Women's Soccer
Junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored her 11th goal of the season and added an assist as the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team upset No. 13 Michigan 3-1 Sunday afternoon in front of 276 fans at McClimon Soccer Complex.
Junior midfielder/forward Marisa Brown (Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore midfielder Kara Kabellis (Homer Glen, Ill.) scored the other two goals for the Badgers (11-4-1 overall, 5-4-1 Big Ten), who finished with a winning record in Big Ten play for the first time since 2000.
The three goals allowed by Michigan (9-5-2, 6-2-1) were the most that it has allowed in a league game since a 4-0 loss at Minnesota on September 29, 2002.
'I talked to the players before the game about the opportunities that we had today,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'We wanted that fifth Big Ten win and a third consecutive win at home. Some people really stepped up, and as a team we stepped up by capitalizing on those opportunities.'
The Wolverines, who out-shot Wisconsin 10-8 in the game, were led on offense by Melissa Dobbyn and her three shots.
Wisconsin struck first in the opening half when Vermeulen beat Michigan keeper Megan Tuura on a penalty kick at the 12:52 mark.
Just under six minutes later, Brown found her own rebound off of a post and tapped it in to extend the UW lead to two goals. Vermeulen was credited with an assist on what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Badgers continued to apply offensive pressure as the second half began and tallied their third goal of the game at 64:24. Kabellis took a free kick from about 30 yards out and beat Tuura for her second goal of the weekend and sixth goal of the season.
Two minutes later Michigan was awarded a penalty kick, but freshman goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.) was able to stop Katelin Spencer's drive. Spencer was able to quickly make up for it though as she scored the lone goal for the Wolverines at the 67:34 mark.
'Obviously this was a huge match for us,' Duerst said. 'It's a great win and we're playing our best soccer right now.'
The Badgers finish their regular season with four non-conference games, beginning this weekend with matches at UW-Milwaukee at 3 p.m. Thursday and at home against UW-Green Bay at 1 p.m. Sunday.
