Wisconsin Shuts Out Ohio State, 2-0
October 22, 2004 | Women's Hockey
The No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated Western Collegiate Hockey Association foe Ohio State 2-0 in Columbus, Ohio. The game extends Wisconsin's winning streak to five games'the longest win-streak to start the season in UW history. Wisconsin also remains undefeated in WCHA action with a 3-0-0 record. OSU is now 2-1-0 in conference play and 3-2-0 overall.
While scoreless in the first period and through most of the second, Wisconsin lit the lamp at 15:31 when junior Nikki Burish slide the puck in amongst chaos on the crease. The Buckeyes had a chance to respond on a breakaway by Meaghan Muvalney, moments later. Junior Meghan Horras' expert netminding skills denied the Buckeyes that time and 11 other times totaling 12 saves, Friday night.
Once again the officials ran a tight game calling 12 penalties on the evening. Wisconsin successfully executed the penalty-kill all seven times and capitalized on five power-play opportunities including Lindsay Macy's fifth goal of the season at 8:11 in the third period. Credited with the assists were Molly Engstrom and Sharon Cole who each took a shot before Macy sealed the deal.
A defensive battle throughout, Wisconsin's blueliners helped Horras secure her third win and first shutout of the season. A timeout at 18:28, an empty net for 1:13 and a flurry of Ohio State shots in the final minutes would not help the host as the seconds ticked down and Wisconsin closed out its third shutout of the season.
Ohio States hosts the rematch tomorrow at the OSU Ice Rink. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m.
