Badgers Pressure Their Way to 5-1 Win Over UWGB
October 24, 2004 | Women's Soccer
The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team continued its historic domination of in-state rival UW-Green Bay with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon in front of 414 fans at McClimon Soccer Complex.
The victory gave the Badgers (13-4-1) an 11-0-0 all-time record against the Phoenix (3-10-3) and extended their current overall winning streak to five games.
Offensively, Wisconsin was led by juniors Katy Lindenmuth (Geneva, Ill.) and Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). The former tallied two goals while the latter added two assists.
Allison Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.) and sisters Molly and Katy Meuer (both from Madison, Wis.) also scored in the match.
Completing the full team effort, UW allowed only two shots on goal in the game, with both shots coming in the first half.
'The key today was our group defending,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'We were relentless today and pressured the ball everywhere on the field.'
That pressure not only shut down the Phoenix offense, but helped the Badgers earn a 25-8 edge in total shots.
Lindenmuth opened the scoring for Wisconsin 12:28 into the match after Molly Meuer played a ball to her in front of the net. UW extended the lead to 2-0 just under six minutes later, as junior Marisa Brown (Evanston, Ill.) dribbled through the middle and found Preiss on the left side for a header. The goal proved to be the game-winner and closed out the scoring for the first half.
Green Bay narrowed the gap to one goal 6:27 into the second half, when Catherine Kadar buried a penalty kick
However, that was as close as the Phoenix would get. Lindenmuth added her second goal of the game and seventh of the season at the 77:13 mark. Then it was time for the Meuer sisters to score twice within a 1:02 stretch. Katy scored first off of a corner kick by Vermeulen and then older sister Molly tallied to close the scoring for the afternoon.
'We're 2-0 now in our three-game series against in-state schools,' Duerst said. 'We'll be focused and ready for Marquette on Wednesday.'
Wisconsin travels to Marquette for a match Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. before returning home to close out the regular season against Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. Saturday.
