UW Tops Marquette, Sweeps State
October 27, 2004 | Women's Soccer
Sophomore midfielder/forward Allison Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.) scored her team-leading fourth game-winning goal, and freshman goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.) earned her fifth shutout, as the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team defeated Marquette 1-0 to complete a sweep of its in-state rivals.
Complementing their wins over UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay last week, the Badgers (14-4-1) bested their opponents from the State of Wisconsin for the second straight year when Preiss notched her seventh goal of the season early in the second half.
Murray improved to 12-4-1 as a starter while UW was triumphant for the sixth consecutive contest, matching its winning streak from the beginning of the season.
'Our team was really pumped for this match,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'Marquette has been doing really well lately, but our team stepped it up and showed its will to win games.'
The Golden Eagles (10-7-1) managed just four shots to the Badgers ' 10. In fact, leading scorers Meghan Connelly and Alison Loughrin were held to just one shot between them.
But Marquette managed to keep UW at bay and have a scoreless first half. Things went in Wisconsin's favor when sophomore defender Natalie Horner (Orono, Minn.) recovered the ball from a turnover and passed it to junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), who in turn headed the ball to Preiss.
From there, Preiss found herself one-on-one with goalkeeper Katie Bissen, who could not stop the shot.
"One of our goals heading into this season was to win the state," Duerst said. "Now we're one step away from another goal'winning all our non-conference games."
The Badgers return to action Saturday for their regular-season finale, taking on Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. at McClimon Soccer Complex.
