Sophomore midfielder/forward Allison Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.) scored twice and added an assist to lead the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team past Indiana 5-2 Sunday afternoon for the squad's second-consecutive Big Ten victory.
'We played 90 all-out minutes today,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'We came out aggressive and decided that this was our game. '
Junior midfielder/forward Marisa Brown (Evanston, Ill.) opened the scoring for Wisconsin (8-3-1 overall, 2-3-1 Big Ten) at the 16:34 mark when her shot from just inside the 18-yard box found the upper right corner for her second goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Kara Kabellis (Homer Glen, Ill.) added her second assist of the season on the play.
Preiss (St. Louis, Mo.) gave the Badgers a two-goal lead when she put a header past IU keeper Lauren Fabbro off of a corner kick by junior midfielder/forward Katy Lindenmuth (Geneva, Ill.) at 25:13. The Badgers maintained the 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Hoosiers (7-3-1, 2-3-1) struck first in the second half when Missy Vierling buried a shot from about 35 yards out at 56:07.
UW responded just 3:23 later, as senior midfielder/defender Molly Meuer (Madison, Wis.) finished a corner kick from junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) to give UW a 3-1 lead.
'We knew how important the next goal would be once the score was 2-1,' Duerst said. 'We were able to get that next goal and it took the wind out of their sails.'
Indiana added a second goal at the 65:28 mark when Megan Pipkins took a long pass and put the ball into the net, cutting the score to 3-2.
Wisconsin held off the Indiana attack and put the game out of reach when Preiss scored her fifth goal of the season off of a rebound at 84:27. Brown was credited with an assist on the play, her second on the year.
Vermeulen finished off the scoring at the 89:14 mark when her shot found the right corner of the net for her 10th goal of the season.
The Badgers will look to build upon their first two Big Ten wins when they return home next weekend to play host to Minnesota at 7 p.m. Friday and Iowa at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
