The University of Wisconsin women's soccer team generated a season-high 26 shots, but Minnesota managed two goals in a 61-second stretch early in the second half to defeat the Badgers 2-1 Friday night in front of 469 fans at McClimon Soccer Complex.
Sophomore midfielder Kara Kabellis (Homer Glen, Ill.) scored the lone goal of the evening for the Badgers (8-4-1 overall, 2-4-1 Big Ten).
Despite out-shooting the Gophers (4-8-0, 1-6-0) 26-13 in the game, including 18-6 in the second half, the Badgers were unable to find an equalizer.
Regina Moench and Haley Lentsch each tallied goals to give Minnesota its first Big Ten win of the season.
'We put ourselves in a position to win, but in the end, we need to bury those chances,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'Minnesota had a few moments in this game and they were able to capitalize.'
Kabellis gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead at 41:44 when her free kick from 22 yards out beat Minnesota goalkeeper Molly Schneider. The Badgers took that lead into halftime.
Moench tied the game 12:41 into the second half, heading home a crossing pass from Becky Dellaria.
Lentsch scored 61 seconds later to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead. Moench made a pass to the left side where Lentsch found some space and placed a shot in the far side of the net.
'We need to learn from tonight, move on and be ready for Iowa,' Duerst said.
The win also gave the Gophers the first 40 points of the Border Battle Cup Competition.
The Badgers continue their Big Ten slate against Iowa at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at McClimon Soccer Complex.
