Mayumi Kobayashi Leads the Field at Palmetto Intercollegiate
November 01, 2004 | Women's Golf
Sherman Oaks, Calif. native Mayumi Kobayashi is atop the leaderboard at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate. Thanks to an opening round two under-par 69, the freshman finds herself in sole possession of first-place with a one stroke lead over Eastern Carolina's Adrienne Millican. The Badgers collectively stand in 12th-place with a score of 308, one shot behind Nebraska (307) and ten shots behind tournament leaders Campbell and Louisville (298).
Kobayashi got off to a fast start, thanks to a 33-stroke performance on the front-nine to keep pace with Millican's 32 and finished the remaining nine holes with a 36-stroke effort to move up the standings into first-place. Kobayashi 's opening round eclipsed her previous 18-hole low (76), set Oct. 17th at the Lady Razorback Invitational, by seven strokes. Kobayashi has improved her tournament finishes dramatically over the last three meets of the fall: starting with a 28th-place tie at the Legends Shootout, building to a 22nd-place tie at the Lady Razorback Invitational and climaxing to her medalist position after round one of the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
The par-72, 5,902-yard Oak Point Golf Club of Charleston, S.C. has not been friendly to the rest of the Badger Women's Golf team. Finishing ten strokes back in a 54th-place tie, is junior Lindsay McMillan and freshman Katie Elliot, the UW's next highest finishers. In their respective debut action of the fall, senior Jackie Obermueller is tied for 69th thanks to an opening-round 81 while junior Jill Ries follows two strokes back in an 83rd-place tie with an 83.
The second half of the action will pick up in the middle of the second round tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. with the final 27 holes to begin by a shotgun start.
