Wisconsin Sweeps Sioux
November 21, 2004 | Women's Hockey
The No. 5/4 Wisconsin crushed the Fighting Sioux, 7-2 to earn a sweep at Ralph Engelstad Arena, Sunday afternoon. The Badgers improved to 9-3-0 overall and 7-3-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association. North Dakota fell to 3-10-1, 3-9-0 in the WCHA.
The Badgers made their intentions clear scoring a goal just 24 seconds into the game. Wisconsin's starting line combined for the score as Sara Bauer sent the puck to Sharon Cole who took a swing and Lindsay Macy grabbed the rebound and poked it in for the goal. Collectively, the line has scored 27 goals this season, nearly half of the team's total 57.
Minutes later, at 5:11, the second shift tallied a goal for the UW. Newcomer Jinelle Zaugg scored, unassisted, for her second goal as a Badger. Again at 8:02, Jackie Friesen lit the lamp with a neat shot in the crease from junior Nikki Burish.
In an effort curb Wisconsin's scoring frenzy, UND switched out Amber Hasbargen in favor of Margaret-Ann Hinkley at 10:22. Undeterred, the Badgers capped off the first 10 minutes of the game with Kristen Witting's goal, her first in two years at Wisconsin. The defender was helped out by fellow blueliner Mikka Nordby and Phoebe Monteleone.
The fourth goal scored for the Badgers was put away by Wisconsin 's fourth line on the ice and the fourth line to score.
A Sioux checking call at 16:11 put Wisconsin up one on the power-play. Molly Engstrom launched the puck from the point and Cyndy Kenyon guided it to the goal at 17:01. Captain Carla MacLeod was also credited with an assist on the final goal of the period.
Nearly every Badger tallied a point in the first period as 12 skaters were involved in one of the stanza's five goals.
A high-sticking call on Engstrom early in the second put the Badger penalty-kill to work. Horras made two crucial saves while the four skaters remaining denied two other Sioux attempts.
UND got on the board with a goal at 8:12 but were quieted 10 seconds later as Meaghan Mikkelson registered her first goal of the season with help from Zaugg and Kenyon. UND scored its second and final goal of the game off a faceoff in Badger territory at 15:01.
Friesen, Mikkelson and MacLeod combined for Wisconsin's seventh goal at 5:48 to start the final leg of the game and finish out the day's scoring.
On paper Meghan Horras had a quiet afternoon with just nine saves in the game. Still, when the Sioux did attack Horras had to deal with a number of quick shots, close to the net. For the Sioux, Hinkley stopped 15 shots.
Wisconsin will travel to Boston over the Thanksgiving holiday to take on Harvard and Northeastern, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27, respectively.
