Carlini Named Big Ten Player of the Week

Sophomore Maria Carlini has been named the Big Ten Conference volleyball player of the week, the conference office announced today. It is her first player of the week honor and the third for the Badgers this season.
Carlini led the Badgers to two Big Ten wins this past the weekend. The 6-2 outside hitter recorded a career-high 19 kills, including seven in the decisive game four, and a career-high 44 attempts as the UW downed Michigan State, 3-1, on Saturday. She also added 11 digs for her second double-double of the weekend.
On Friday against Michigan, Carlini shared match-high honors with 13 kills and again added 11 digs. Against the Wolverines, she hit a match high .550. Carlini also added a crucial block solo in both matches.
On the weekend, Carlini averaged 4.57 kills per game while hitting .391. She also added 3.14 digs, 0.57 assist, 0.14 service aces, and 0.29 blocks per game.
Carlini and the Badgers wrap up the 2004 regular season with two Big Ten matches on the road this weekend. Wisconsin (18-8, 12-6 Big Ten) travels to Purdue (15-13, 8-10) on Friday for a 6 p.m. CST match in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility in West Lafayette, Ind. On Saturday, the Badgers take on Indiana (8-21, 2-6) at 6 p.m. CST in the University Gym in Bloomington, Ind.
The 64-team bracket for the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be announced on Sunday at 6 p.m. CST on ESPNEWS. The Badgers are looking for their ninth consecutive and 13th overall appearance in the tournament where they are 20-12.
