University of Wisconsin junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) was named first-team All-Big Ten by league coaches, the conference announced today.
Vermeulen, who was Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week earlier this season, leads the team in points (33), goals (11) and assists (11). She is the first Badger to be selected to the first team since Jenny Kundert back in 2002.
'Amy has been so consistent this year, and it's great that she earned this recognition,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'She is a big reason for our success this season.'
Vermeulen's award was one of several for the UW squad. Sophomore midfielder Kara Kabellis (Homer Glen, Ill.) and junior midfielder/forward Katy Lindenmuth (Geneva, Ill.) both earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, with Lindenmuth being chosen for the second consecutive year.
Goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.), meanwhile, made it to the All-Freshman team. She boasts a 13-4-1 record, five shutouts and a 1.09 goals-against average.
Wisconsin, the No. 6 seed, will play third-seeded Michigan at 6:30 p.m. CT Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten tournament on the campus of Ohio State.
