Three Badgers Earn Regional Honors
December 16, 2004 | Women's Soccer
Three University of Wisconsin women's soccer players were selected to the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes regional team, the organization announced today, as sophomore Kara Kabellis (Homer Glen, Ill.) was named to the second team, and junior Katy Lindenmuth (Geneva, Ill.) and Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) were chosen for the third team.
The awards mark the third straight year in which a UW athlete has made the regional team. All three Badgers were picked for the first time in their career.
'Those three really deserve it,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'It's a credit to the entire team, in that those three were still recognized despite us playing a team-game all year.
'Kabellis was amazing on set plays, Lindenmuth was able to break down defenses for us and Vermeulen was such a consistent threat up top. They proved all year long that it was hard to stop them, and that's why we were so successful. '
Kabellis, a second-team All-Big Ten midfielder, was fourth on the team in points (15) from six goals and three assists. Earlier this season, she had a two-goal weekend in helping the Badgers secure a spot in the Big Ten tournament and upset then-No. 13 Michigan.
Lindenmuth is a fellow second-team All-Big Ten member whose points (22), goals (7) and assists (8) were each second-best on the team. The midfielder/forward was the Oct. 25 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for tallying five points in a two-game span, which was part of a five-match winning streak by UW.
Leading the team in offense with 12 points and 11 assists for 35 points was Vermeulen, a midfielder/forward who started all 23 matches. Besides being named to Soccer Buzz and Soccer America teams of the week, she also was Wisconsin's only first-team All-Big Ten selection.
Collectively, the Badgers ended the season with a 16-6-1 record (10-0 vs. regular-season, non-conference opponents) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they loss to eventual champion Notre Dame.
