Bairu Wins Canadian Cross Country Championship

Wisconsin junior Simon Bairu (Regina, Sasketchewan) won the 2004 Canadian Cross Country Championships held today in Toronto, Ontario. He completed the 10,000m course in a time of 29:50, seven seconds faster than second place Paul Morrison (29:57). This is Bairu 's second Canadian Cross Country title as he won the championship last year in 31:24.
The win adds to Bairu's impressive junior season at UW. On Nov. 22 he became the first Badger runner to win the individual NCAA title since 1985, as he crossed the line first in 30:38 at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Bairu was also named Big Ten Athlete of the Year for the second straight year as he won his second Big Ten individual title and led the team to its sixth consecutive championship.
