Sheila Shaw Named All-Region

Sheila Shaw, a junior on the University of Wisconsin volleyball team, has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Mideast Region team. She will now be placed on the ballot for All-America honors. Senior Jill Odenthal received honorable mention all-region honors and was chosen as a select group of honorable mention honorees who will also be considered for All-America honors.
Shaw picks up her first all-region honor. The 6-1 middle blocker was a unanimous pick to the 2004 All-Big Ten Conference team. She currently leads the Big Ten with 1.34 blocks per game and leads the UW with 3.82 kills per game. The Muskego, Wis., native has recorded double-figure kills in a team-high 23 matches this season and has led the UW in kills in 12 matches. Shaw has also led the Badgers in blocks in 15 matches. She was named the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 1, the most valuable player of the 2004 InnTowner Invitational and to the 2004 Jayhawk Invitational All-Tournament team.
Odenthal, a 6-0 opposite hitter, ranks second on the UW team with 2.99 kills per game. She has recorded double-digit kills in 17 matches and double-figure digs in seven matches. The Geneva, Ill., native ranks third on the team with 88 total blocks (0.82/game). Odenthal was a 2003 All-Big Ten and AVCA All-Mideast Region pick. She was named to the 2004 InnTowner Invitational all-tournament team.
The 14th-seeded Badgers have advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and will play their NCAA Regional semifinal match vs. third-seeded Hawai'i on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Resch Center, 1901 S. Oneida St., in Green Bay, Wis. The Badgers are 21-9 on the season while the Rainbow Wahine are the only undefeated Division I team in the nation at 30-0.
Sixth-seeded Texas (26-4) will take on 11th-seeded Stanford (26-6) in other regional semifinal at 5 p.m. on Friday. Match winners will advance to the regional final on Saturday at 3 p.m. The regional final will be broadcast live on CSTV.
The winner of the regional will move on to the NCAA Championship in Long Beach, Calif., on Dec. 16 and 18.
