Women's Soccer Signs Six For 2004-05
February 10, 2004 | Women's Soccer
University of Wisconsin women's soccer head coach Dean Duerst has announced the signing of six individuals to join the Badger program for the 2004 season. The list includes four Wisconsin natives, including three from the Madison area.
The signees include forwards Taylor Walsh (Madison, Wis./East) and Amy Lewis (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy), midfielder Shannon Terry (Long Lake, Minn./Orono), defenders Ann Eshun (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) and Katy Meuer (Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial) and goalkeeper Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga./Wheeler).
'As a whole, this group is well-rounded in terms of positions,' Duerst said. 'We've got a goalkeeper, we've got two backs, two forwards, plus the forwards can also play midfield. With that kind of versatility they're really going to help the strength of the overall team. They are six players of quality caliber that have all had experiences at a high level. Both Murray and Walsh have represented their regional teams at national events. We've got some kids with athleticism in this group.'

Duerst on Eshun: 'Ann is a very smooth athlete. She uses her speed well and uses her ability to read things well. She's smooth in her athleticism, but smart in her play. Tactically she reads the game quickly. We see Ann as someone whose speed we can use out wide. She has experienced winning at a high level having won the state club championship each of the past two seasons.'
Amy Lewis (5-3, Forward, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy)
All-state, all-area and all-conference selection as both a sophomore and junior ' conference player of the year as a junior ' team's leading goal scorer in 2002 and 2003 ' played for Green Bay Metro club team ' also played tennis, earning all-state, all-area and all-conference honors all four years ' helped lead Notre Dame Academy to Division II team state championships each of her last two seasons ' captured #1 doubles state title as a senior ' honor roll student ' born 5/8/86 ' parents are Gary and Holly Lewis
Duerst on Lewis: 'Amy is a real sniper around the goal. She isn't real big, but she gets in front of defenders with her quickness and a real sense of where the ball is going to end up around the goal. As a club player she has scored a lot of goals. Her quickness is her asset. She is very comfortable on the ball and has good skills. Amy is somebody who will come here and definitely score some goals.'
Katy Meuer (5-5, Defender/Midfielder, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial)
Varsity team member all four years ' team captain and second-team all-conference as a junior and senior ' 2002 all-city selection ' member of state ODP team for five years ' played for Yahara Hot Peppers club team ' class treasurer ' student advisory committee member ' high honor roll student ' born 6/12/86 ' parents are Kelly and Sandy Meuer ' older sister Molly is also a member of Badger soccer team
Duerst on Meuer: 'Katy is very similar to her sister (Molly) in that she is a very hard-working individual that shows up in what she is able to do as a role player. She fits into different places around the field where you may need her to. That's the kind of a player that can help a program. She is a strong, quick athlete that has a great training mentality and intensity in her play. '
Lynn Murray (5-9, Goalkeeper, Marietta, Ga./Wheeler)
Team MVP as a freshman and junior ' team captain and second-team All-Cobb County as a sophomore and junior ' member of United Quest Red 85's club team ' helped club to four Snickers Georgia State Cup championships ' participated in U.S. U-19 National Team camp during October 2003 and 2002 ESP/National camp ' member of U-17 and U-18 regional ODP teams ' 2002 Region III championship team member ' competed at 2003 National ODP Championships ' National Honor Society member ' academic letterwinner ' born 9/10/85 ' parents are Frank and Barbara Murray
Duerst on Murray: 'It's always very good to get a top player from a different region. She has had experience with her club team at high-level events, including national competitions. She also has training with the U-19 National Team. Her size, speed and strength are some of her best attributes. She covers the goal well and has very good range.'
Shannon Terry (5-6, Midfielder/Forward, Long Lake, Minn./Orono)
2003 all-conference, all-metro and all-state selection ' conference MVP and team captain as a junior ' 2002 all-conference and all-state ' set school single-season record for goals (29) and assists (14) ' member of Wayzata Soccer club team ' born 7/19/86 ' parents are Tom Terry and Gara Gehring ' attended same high school as Badger defender Natalie Horner
Duerst on Terry: 'Shannon's strength is in her fast, aggressive all-out play. She has real good speed, but she is just real physical. She plays hockey as well and one thing about hockey players is they are very good with their bodies in shielding, screening and getting by people. Shannon is someone who could play up front or out wide with that kind of speed.'
Taylor Walsh (5-7, Forward, Madison, Wis./East)
Earned all-state honors as a junior ' two-time all-city and all-conference selection ' member of the Madison 56ers Capital Elite club team ' helped lead the team to back-to-back state championships ' 2003 regional ODP team member ' state ODP member for seven years ' born 3/6/86 ' parents are John Walsh and Frankie Kirk Rottier
Duerst on Walsh: 'Taylor is a player that has really developed in the past few years and has been recognized for that development. She is someone who can score goals. She is very slippery, in soccer terms. Similar to a hockey player, she can split two defenders and find the corners. Taylor is an attacking player who has a real great sense for the goal.'
