Edmondson Leads Badgers at Penn State

The University of Wisconsin women's track and field team finished 11th at the Penn State Challenge Cup on Saturday. The Badgers scored 21 points while host Penn State won the meet with 158 1/3 points. Ohio State finished second with 105 ' and Michigan was third with 74 points.
Senior Hilary Edmondson recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the mile. The Sarnia, Ontario, native finished second in 4:36.12, which is also the second fastest time ever run by a UW athlete. Edmondson ranks behind Suzy Favor's Big Ten Conference all-time best of 4:30.63.
Freshman Shuntia Lucas also ran the second-fastest time in Wisconsin history in her event. The Benton Harbor, Mich., native finished sixth in the 200-meter dash in 24.49. She ranks only behind Lisa Payne's UW record of 24.42. Freshman Venus Washington finished 28th in the 200 in 25.95.
Seniors Angie Kolanko and Michelle Lilienthal picked up sixth-place finishes for the Badgers. Kolanko was sixth in the high jump at 5-7 while Lilienthal finished sixth in the 3000 in 9:38.03. Senior Maggie Guiney was 11th in the 3000 in 10:02.34 and freshman Sarah Konkel finished 25th in 10:22.96. In the high jump, sophomore Danielle Ohmen tied for 14th at 5-5 and freshman Theresa Giorno tied for 17th at 5-3.
Sophomore Melissa Talbot ran an indoor personal best of 56.61 in the 400 meters to finish eighth. Her time also moves her into eighth on the UW's all-time list. Senior Kym Hubing finished 24th in the 400 in 58.30 and sophomore Lisa Oikarinen was 30th in 59.18.
Talbot and Hubing teamed with Erica Schoeller and Tara Halls to run a season's best of 3:52.44 in the 4x400-meter relay to finish 11th. Halls was also the highest UW finisher in the 800 meters, coming in 13th in 2:13.83. Junior Katie Kolpin finished 14th in 2:14.46. Freshman Krystle Wasmundt was 24th in 2:20.27.
In the field events, junior Courtney Bauer finished 11th in the shot put at 43-9 ' and sophomore Jamae Gjermo was 14th in 42-9 '. Senior Yael Peled was the highest Wisconsin finisher in the triple jump, coming in 12th at 36-7 '. Senior Julie Stefan was 14th in 36-0 ' and junior Christina Taylor was 16th at 35-1.
