July 18, 2004 | Men's Track & Field
Demi Omole, a sophomore-to-be on the University of Wisconsin men's track and field team, was part of the world record-setting 4x100-meter relay at the World Junior Championships on Sunday.
In the relay David "Trell" Kimmons, got out to an early lead with Omole running the second leg. Ivory Williams of Texas ran the third leg handing off to LaShawn Merritt who cruised to a world junior record time of 38.66 seconds, bettering the 38.92 set in 2002 by Team USA.
'My main goal was to catch anyone outside of my lane as I ran hard as I could. Once I gave it (baton) to Ivory (Williams), I knew it was all done with the (world junior) record,' said Omole after the relay.
Omole returns from the world meet with a silver medal in the 100 meters and a gold medal in the relay.
The Milwaukee native won the 100 meters at the USA Junior Championships in a wind-aided 10.14 seconds. He was the 2004 Big Ten Outdoor champion at 100 meters and also anchored the Badgers' 4x100-meter relay to the conference title. Omole set the UW record in the 100 meters with his fifth-place clocking of 10.15 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which garnered him his first All-America honor.
