UW Falls to Northwestern in OT, 2-1
September 24, 2004 | Women's Soccer
University of Wisconsin junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to tie the match against Northwestern, but the Badgers' 25th-ranked women's soccer team could not produce again as it lost 2-1 in overtime.
Vermeulen was tripped early in the second half by NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones and was awarded a penalty kick, which she made. Her goal knotted the match at 1-1 following Tabitha Lowey's goal at the 34th minute.
The Badgers (6-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 Big Ten) and the Wildcats (5-4-0, 1-2-0) then played to a stalemate to close out regulation. In overtime, Northwestern defender/midfielder Carolyn Hack emerged from a scramble in front of the Wisconsin goal and knocked in a score from 10 yards out at 96:15 for the game-winner.
'We did not come out to meet the battle at hand, especially in the first half,' head coach Dean Duerst said. 'We had numerous chances to put the game away, but we just couldn't convert.'
The Badgers hit the second of four straight road matches with a contest against No. 10 Illinois at 2 p.m. Sunday in Champaign, Ill.
